Past the Sash
Katherine Merck- former Miss Rodeo America lives by the motto "A Cowboy is Born, Not Made". Merck didn't grow up in the rodeo industry but found her way to the sport and the western lifestyle. Her love for barrel racing began at age eleven and reining soon after. "I started reining and combined my dance background with my love of riding in freestyle reining. I've competed in the American Quarter Horse Association, National Reining Horse Association and our local affiliates over the years", says Merck. She explained that reining builds a foundation of skills that is required in many different disciplines within the Rodeo and equine industries. Currently her personal horses are trained in reining prior to any other disciplines. While in college, she competed on the University of St. Andrews Riding Team in dressage and show jumping while studding abroad. Merck is versed in many different styles of riding but hopes to compete in barrel racing once again. "While I'll never give up my barrel racing dreams. I enjoy team roping and plan to start breakaway roping as soon as the weather warms up here in the Northwest", says Merck.Â
